They will attack their reflection in the window; especially during mating and nesting season. They can be injured and sometimes, although, the articles I read say, rarely, killed. (Thank goodness!)
I understand it is normal behavior for Cardinals and other species of birds for that matter. It is normal, but it is based on an inaccurate belief. Its normal behavior becomes self-destructive behavior when it is based on inaccurate beliefs.

Cardinals and other birds for that matter can be injured and killed when they attack their reflection in a window. What they believe matters.
